Criteria

Habitat for Humanity London builds homes in London, Ontario. In order to qualify to become a Habitat for Humanity London homeowner you must be a resident of London, Ontario*

The basic criteria for eligibility include:

  1. A need for housing
  2. Ability to pay
  3. Ability to partner

1. A need for housing can be demonstrated if:

  • Your current housing is unsafe or unhealthy
  • There are insufficient bedrooms for all members of your family according to CNIT standards**
  • You spend a disproportionate percentage of your income on housing (40% or more)

2. Ability to pay can be demonstrated if:

  • You have a steady source of income (Ontario Work and Employment Insurance do not qualify)
  • You have a minimum income of $23,769 annually
  • You have an income that does not exceed the CNIT standards (see below)
  • You have a good credit rating and manageable debt ratio

3. Ability to partner

  • You are able to do 500 hours of sweat equity with HFHL
  • You are able to participate in all home ownership preparation workshops and training sessions.

*People who have worked in London for at least 3 years and who live within 5 km of London and would be willing to move to a home in London may be considered if they meet all other criteria.

HFHL administers Adopt-A-Home programs in the surrounding counties of Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford from time to time. In those instances families from within the host community will be considered eligible.

*For the purpose of determining core housing need, suitable accommodation is defined as: a maximum of 2 and a minimum of 1 person per bedroom based on the following:

  • parents are eligible for a separate bedroom from their children
  • household aged 18 or more are eligible for a separate bedroom unless married or otherwise common-law
  • dependents aged 5 or more of the opposite sex do not share a bedroom
